Music Video Conventions

These are split up in to a number of categories:

1) Camera Angles
  • A number of close up shots are important in a music video to concentrate on the instruments
  • Crane shots so the camera hovers over the stage
  • Low angles showing the band to be dominant
  • Long shots to view the whole band
  • Pans to pan across the stage
2) Editing and Sound
  • Footage is edited to match music
  • Jump cuts are used frequently
  • Split screen shots
  • Chosing to include Diagetic sound
  • Changes in volume
3) Mise en scene
  • Props - Instruments, merchandise
  • Costume - matching costume for band or unique one to make video stand out
  • Location - Stage, Streets
  • Facial expressions - Makes the video look legit
