Magazine article

Our magazine article is a black background with shots of the video on it; the black was chosen so as the pictures stand out and draw the eye to it as fans of the group will see them and be attracted. We included still shots from the music video so as people who enjoyed the video would see it and be attracted to it as they would want to know what else was happening to do with it. We used a banner-type title so as the advert looked like an unavailing of something important and put the name of the band THE BANGLES in capitals and bright blue to draw eyes directly to it. We included all the useful information necessary in an advert without a huge block of text as we thought that a great deal of writing would repel readers and put them off looking at the article; by breaking the information down into need-to-know points people would more easily take in the information without having to try. We also included a band logo of HMV so as people that could not be bovered to read the article at all would see the logo and therefore associate it with the place at which they could buy the product. We used an easy-to-read font for the majority of the writing so as it would be easily consumed and also put the price of the DVD in bold so as it stood out.

dvd analysis

the front cover of the DVD clearly displays the bans name and their logo and gives an image of them and a title of the DVD on the bottom. The colour scheme is consistant throughout the cover and all links together; the scheme being gold which fits in with the title GOLD. The band is all dressed in differnt shades of gold and the women are dressed quite provocitively which sells them as artists. The spine is gold which fits in with the title of the DVD and the it also contains three logos of and also has the DVD logo at the bottom of the spine. The back of the DVD has the STEPS logo on the top right corner and the DVD title on the top left corner. It then has a short scenopsis on the top middle of the DVD and tells you what the DVD will include. I then has a list of all the videos included on the DVD in gold writing to fit in with the theme. Beneath the list the DVD includes 20 still frames of the artists in the videos which sells the artists and also shows their diversity as a group as they are wearing a lot of differnt outfits and broadcasting themselves in a lot of differnt looks. Beneath the pictures there is a logo of the DVD producer and various company referances and copyrights. Beneath that is has the STEPS website and the producers website to sell the artists. It also again has logos and them a barcode.

still image

This is a still from the music video, we could use this in our album cover :)

album research

This is our album research images, we could have a still or an image on the front cover with the name of band/song then bar code.

Feedback Analysis

We thought our feedback was fair and useful for us for when we do our real music video next year.

We already knew that our Lip Syncing was slightly off and with extra editing time we would have improved this.

Also with more time we could have improved the green screen backgrounds by using videos instead of still images. This would have created better flow in our movie.

The one thing we disagreed with was the comment saying we shouldn't have put a guitar in because there wasn't one in the song. There was so we were confused to why this group put this.

The Bangles- eternal flame

feedback S 1 31

We really liked the idea of your video! although the lip syncing could have been more enthusiastic. Using the green screen showed good editing skills and gave an extra element to the video, also it matched the genre of the music. The instrumental playing could have been more realistic ! whaaaaaay b e a utiful!!

Feedback

Lip syncing was slightly out of time. The song didn't have a guitar in it but the video did. The green screen backgrounds would've looked better if they maybe faded into eachother. In one part the camerawork was bad. The idea for the video was good and fitted the genre quite well.

Feedback from s133

Your music video had good genre characteristics with the clouds as the background and white shirt for his costume. However, the main thing that let your video down was the bad lip syncing which drew your attention away from the other factors of the video. It sold the artist well as it focused on the main singer.

Feed back- for video

The lip syncing was out by a few seconds, and it was obvious that Oli didn't know the words.
It sold the artist though, as he was never off the screen.
The attempt at using green screen was good for trying to get voyeurism into the video.
The visual/lyrics didn't go with the video.
The genre characteristics went with the video.
There was no intertextuality.

Storyboards and Shot lists

The Bangles- eternal flame lyrics

Starts singing at 0:08 seconds;

Close your eyes, give me your hand, darling
Do you feel my heart beating, do you understand?
Do you feel the same, am I only dreaming?
Is this burning an eternal flame?

I believe it's meant to be, darling
I watch when you are sleeping, you belong to me
Do you feel the same, am I only dreaming
Or is this burning an eternal flame?

Music Video Conventions

These are split up in to a number of categories:

1) Camera Angles
  • A number of close up shots are important in a music video to concentrate on the instruments
  • Crane shots so the camera hovers over the stage
  • Low angles showing the band to be dominant
  • Long shots to view the whole band
  • Pans to pan across the stage
2) Editing and Sound
  • Footage is edited to match music
  • Jump cuts are used frequently
  • Split screen shots
  • Chosing to include Diagetic sound
  • Changes in volume
3) Mise en scene
  • Props - Instruments, merchandise
  • Costume - matching costume for band or unique one to make video stand out
  • Location - Stage, Streets
  • Facial expressions - Makes the video look legit

Editing Ideas

Primarily the main concern for our editing is to get the lip syncing at perfect timing with the song, by Oli singing the song well will create a better effect however it will be mainly editing which will make the two fit together.

We will have transitions between certain scenes, these transitions will be ones which fit in with the song or make it more interesting yet without making it look out of place like effects such as checkerboard. Good ones which our group is likely to use will be fade in/out and wipe.

We could have titles at the beginning of the song stating the name of the song and/or the artist. This sells the artist and therefore helps us meet the music video conventions

costume

We have decided to base Oli's costume on a stereotypical "boy-band" look. On researching the subject, it became apparent that many of the tackier groups dressed in all white wearing clothes such as white shirts and vests; we decided to incorporate this look into our video by dressing Oli in a white vest and white shirt.
Boybands often wear very loud hairstyles, often floppy or spiky. On researching the subject we decided to have Oli's hair spiky with bleached tips.

video props

we are going to use a guitar and mime to play it. we are going to do this to fit the acoustic effects in the song.

we are going to use a watering can to create the effect of rain to pour over oli during certain shots. which will suit the theme of the song.

we will use a photograph during the song as a symbol to oli's girlfriend who we show him losing.
we will also use a lighter to show oli burning the picture which links to the image eternal flame.

a fan will be used to blow olis shirt around during the wind scene.

Practise Editing task

For our practice editing task we edited a previous groups filming of 'You wanna what'

We had to place the clips in order, putting the chorus in multiple times as this was in the song more than once. We put effects in to practice which ones were good for our film.

We learned to lip sync the video material in perfect sync with the song and to put effects in without changing the place of the video.

Music video task

Our song shall be Eternal Flame by the Bangles.

Our lead singer shall be Oli, he will be dressed in white trousers and a white shirt which will be buttoned very low. We will use the green screen to create the background images of rain, wind and fire. With each scene featuring a different appearance from Oli.

These will include Oli being Wet, windy and passionate.

We shall have matt as the background guitarist playing behind Oli whilst he sings.
